Zoe Saldana spoke to IGN about Gamora’s role in the upcoming "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2," specifically her relationship with her adopted sister, Nebula.
Nebula was a nemesis in the first movie, but this time around, she’ll be a full-fledged member of the Guardians.
“You’ll begin to get a glimpse of how terrible life must have been like to grow up with a crazy stepfather through Nebula,” Saldana said. “Nebula is still in that teen-y, f***ing hateful sh**. She’s just resentful and bitter."
The actress explained that her character is entirely focused on redemption for her past actions.
“[For] Gamora, everything she does is trying to gain redemption for what she’d done before. That’s where you’re going to find her and then, obviously, their relationship is very volatile,” she said.
“We’re starting somewhere very crazy but appropriate given where we had ended things off in the first installment. So Thanos is definitely spoken about -- not highly.”
Entertainment Weekly reported on a brand new character set to be introduced in the sequel: an acquaintance of the Guardians named Mantis.
“She has never really experienced social interaction,” executive producer Jonathan Schwartz said.
“Everything she learns about dealing with people, she learns from the Guardians of the Galaxy, which is a very weird group to learn your social intricacies from.”
Schwartz also revealed that Groot will be much different in the sequel than he was in the original 2014 movie.
“He doesn’t have the wisdom and experience of that Groot,” he said. “He’s a younger Groot and a more rambunctious Groot. The question is, is he the same Groot, just smaller? Or is he a different Groot that’s sprung up from the seed of the first Groot?”
Saldana is set to appear at Comic Con in San Diego on July 23 -- way ahead of the release of the film, which is set to open in the summer of 2017.
